If you’re planning to travel to the EU with your pet, it’s important to be aware that the rules have changed.
For UK residents (England, Scotland and Wales), if a trip is planned with a dog, cat or ferret to Europe, an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) will be required every time.
What Has Changed?
- Pets travelling from GB to the EU must have an Animal Health Certificate (AHC)
- Existing EU pet passports can only be used if the owner is an EU resident (proof may be required at the border)
What is an Animal Health Certificate (AHC)?
An AHC is an official document required for your pet to travel to the EU.
- Valid for entry into the EU
- Allows onward travel within the EU for up to 4 months
- Allows re-entry into Great Britain within 4 months
- Applies to a maximum of 5 pets per vehicle under non-commercial travel rules
Please note: AHCs are single-use documents and must be obtained for each trip.

- EU passport holder living in the UK (GB resident) → AHC required
- GB resident with a second home in the EU / frequent traveller → AHC required
Step-by-Step Guide to Getting an AHC
1. Book an appointment
Contact reception to book and complete a travel questionnaire (includes travel dates and vaccination details).
2. Rabies vaccination
If your pet is not up to date, this must be given at least 21 days before travel.
- Valid for 3 years (depending on vaccine used)
3. AHC appointment
Book an appointment within the 10-day window before travel, as the certificate must be issued within this time.
4. Tapeworm treatment (dogs only)
Required for travel to:
- Ireland
- Northern Ireland
- Finland
- Malta
- Norway
This must be administered 24–120 hours before entry.
